A Longitudinal Study on the Effect of Mode of Reading on Incidental Collocation Learning and Predictors of Learning Gains

This article reports on a longitudinal study the impact of reading mode incidental collocation learning and predictors gains. The experiment lasted 11 weeks involved 118 Vietnamese EFL learners who were assigned to an experimental group no-treatment control group. encountered 32 target collocations in three graded readers modes: reading-while-listening, with textual input enhancement (i.e., underlining), reading-while-listening plus counterbalanced fashion. Incidental was assessed at level form recall. findings indicated significant effect collocations. Significantly more learned modes than mode. Reading-while-listening enhancement, however, did not differ significantly from enhancement. results also revealed that learners’ prior vocabulary knowledge collocational congruency affected learning.
